Square Foot Gardening is a great way to grow a lot in a small space. Ideally, you would want to use a 4 ft by 4 ft box which would create 16 units to grow in but you can add or subtract as you wish, just make sure each space is a square foot.

The benefits of square foot gardening are many but the fact that it keeps the weeds down and at times even stops them from germinating is my favorite reason! It’s fast and easy and takes a lot of the work out of traditional gardening.
Here are some things you can grow and the suggested amount in each square space:
  • Garlic: 4
  • Carrots: 16
  • Head lettuce: 4
  • Leaf Lettuce: 16
  • Kale: 2
  • Beets: 9
  • Radishes: 16
  • Onions: 9
  • Cilantro: 9
  • Rutabagas: 4
  • Arugula: 16
  • Leeks: 6
  • Parsnips: 9
  • Swiss Chard: 2
I would throw some Marigolds in the mix as well for pest control. Although it is suggested personally I would not not put following plants in my Square Space Garden due to the growing pattern of the plants but you do as you please:
  • Tomatoes – they just get too big and need their own space
  • Hot peppers – I just don’t want them creeping up and ‘flavoring’ my other plants
  • Mint – I would suggest planting Mint in it’s own container
  • Melons, Squash, Pumpkin – they just grow too wild – need lots of space
Be creative and most of all HAVE FUN!!!
