If you decide to grow your own potatoes, please know that there could be little cost benefit to it at first. Growing your own potatoes is a great experience but there is a method to it that needs to be followed. I prefer to grow my own potatoes because they are fun to watch grow and the taste is so much better than store bought. Here are a few tips to get you thinking about growing potatoes at home:
-
Do NOT use a potato bought from a store – use a seed potato
-
Cut into pieces – each on needs to have an eye
-
Do not plant until at least late January
-
Plant in ground or container – best to use trench method if using soil
-
Use good, rich soil
-
Add soil as plants get taller
As I touched on, the biggest benefit to me is the TASTE! There is such a dramatic difference that just can’t be beat!
